Beta-Blockers

Beta-blockers are a class of prescription medication used to treat a variety of conditions.

Propranolol, a type of beta-blocker medication, is prescribed to alleviate tremors, chest pain, high blood pressure and more. It’s also been prescribed off-label by doctors for decades to prevent the physical symptoms of performance anxiety during presentations, performances, exams, and other high-pressure situations.

Yes, beta-blockers can be taken with most other medications and supplements. However, there are some medications it shouldn’t be taken with.

You can find a list of these medications here.

Always be sure to let your doctor know if you’re currently taking these or any other medications or supplements.

Though rare, taking beta-blockers like Propranolol for anxiety can cause some side effects. These may include:

  • Slower heart rate
  • Diarrhea
  • Dry eyes
  • Hair loss
  • Nausea
  • Weakness or tiredness

Be sure to check both the treatment plan provided by your doctor and the manufacturer's pamphlet included with your prescription for a full list of potential side effects as well as any additional information.

If you experience these or any other side effects, please let your doctor know before continuing with your medication. If you’re experiencing an emergency, call 911.

Beta-blockers are generally considered safe by doctors; however, they aren’t right for everyone. It’s important you share a complete and up-to-date medical history with your doctor so they can make a fully informed recommendation.

You can see a list of who shouldn’t use beta-blockers.

Please be sure to provide your doctor with a full and up-to-date medical history so they can make the best recommendation for you.

Beta-blockers have been the go-to treatment trusted by doctors, speakers, and professional performers for decades.

In the 1970s, a study conducted on classical musicians suggested that beta-blockers could reduce the physical symptoms of performance anxiety by blocking excess adrenaline.

Pop star Katy Perry has been quoted for using beta-blockers before every performance to ensure that she “doesn’t let herself down,” and Grammy-nominated Musician and Mozart in the Jungle author Blair Tindall has long been a vocal supporter of beta-blockers.

Usage amongst professional musicians is so widespread that a 2015 study by the Royal College of Music in London found that three-quarters of those surveyed had used beta-blockers for performances or auditions, with 92% finding them effective.

Executives, entrepreneurs, and high-level performers in other industries also trust them. Former Match CEO Jim Safka said beta-blockers saved and accelerated his career, calling propranolol a “magic pill.”

Your blood pressure is used by your doctor to help them determine whether or not you’re in generally good health. A blood pressure reading that’s too high or too low may cause doctors to recommend against writing a prescription or make an alternative recommendation.

If you haven’t had your blood pressure taken recently, or can’t remember what the reading was the last time you had it taken, you can visit your local pharmacy. Walmart and Rite-Aids nationwide have free blood pressure stations. Alternatively, enter your location into higi or Pursuant Health to find the nearest blood pressure station near you.

Though we recommend visiting a pharmacy to have your blood pressure read for free, blood pressure can be taken at home. Click here to learn more about taking an accurate blood pressure reading from home.

Situational anxiety, also often referred to as performance anxiety, is an onset of distracting and uncomfortable anxiety symptoms during specific situations, including performances, public speaking events, networking events, auditions, exams, and job interviews.

This is different from generalized anxiety, which results in constant and persistent feelings of anxiety regardless of the situation.

Lifestyle changes, mindfulness practices, exposure therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy are among some of the most popular treatment options for overcoming performance anxiety.

Sleep

Our monthly subscription includes guidance from expert doctors, prescription medications, a personalized sleep journal, and CBT-i coaching.

All of this is accessible from our site and without the need for an in-person appointment.

Subscriptions are on a monthly basis and can be canceled at any time.

Following your online consult, your doctor will prescribe you two medications to trial. You’ll trial one medication for the first week and the other medication for the second week, keeping a sleep journal along the way to track your progress.

After two weeks, you’ll check in with your doctor to let them know how you’re doing and how effective each medication was for you.

If you’ve found a solution in those first two weeks, your doctor will write you a full prescription for that medication. If not, you’ll continue to trial medications under the supervision of your doctor until you’ve found what works.

Your doctor will also provide coaching along the way and suggest any lifestyle changes that may help you progress.

Visit this page for more information about our insomnia medication trials.
